Teaching jobs rising in popularity amongst students

A recent study of children at secondary school ages show that there has been a rise in popularity of student’s aspiring to get into the teaching profession. The study indicated that one in ten on the students that they interviewed wanted to become teachers or lecturers once they have completed their education.

This rise in popularity is thought to be down to a number of reasons, partly recent television series such as ‘Educating Yorkshire’ has made students see the teachers view point of providing education showing them inspirational figures that teach in modern styles to motivate their pupils.

However when the students that were surveyed were asked to predict what level of pay they thought teachers were getting the vast majority over-estimated the wages and were pretty shocked to find out the actual current salary for standard teachers. 50% of these students then said this would make them reconsider their career choices.

It would seem that unless the pay scale for teachers is vastly improved we could be losing out on the opportunity to get more newly qualified teachers that have motivation and flair for improving the learning of young people in our schools.
